Scattered showers today, serious threat for the weekend

RADAR CHECK: A band of showers and thunderstorms stretching from Red Bay to Jackson Mississippi will continue to move east this morning. Off and on rain with some thunder is likely over the next few hours.

TODAY: Showers and a few thunderstorms are expected off and on, highs near the 60s with areas of fog mixed in. Winds picking up as our pressure gradient rises ahead of our next system, expect winds SE 10-20 mph gusting to 25 mph.

ALABAMA WEEKEND: We’re probably facing the best severe weather threat in a while across the Deep South. A dynamic system across the southern plains will bring us the potential for severe storms Saturday afternoon into overnight. Damaging winds, tornadoes and hail up to a quarter inch are all possible. The SPC has outlined a level 3 out of 5 for Pickens, Greene, Sumter and Marengo Counties, a level 2 out of 5 slight risk for much of central AL and marginal risk for areas east of HWY 431. Everywhere has the potential for a severe thunderstorm Saturday evening and overnight. Should we get showers during the day before the main line moves through, the impacts may be limited a bit due to convective pollution and an overall more stable atmosphere. Have multiple ways to receive alerts as this threat will extend into the night.

Next week looks much quieter, a weak frontal system bringing colder air and maybe a shower midweek. We look much colder by the end of the week, the first few days of 2025.
