NEW DELHI: Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on young dater Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unfortunate run-out during Boxing Day Test by Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar explained that the mix-up between the India opener and Virat Kohli could have been avoided if the former had not spent his seconds watching the fielders.
“It would have been a quick run and someone like Virat Kohli would have done it for sure. But the thing was, he was looking at the fielder. When you look at the fielder, when you turn, you’ve lost that important second. And then naturally you think, ‘No, I’d like to be able to do it’. Your balance is completely off and it would have been a tight race at that point, why do you have to take a race that involves an element of risk.
“At that time the risk was not really necessary. But it could only have been done because Kohli is such a great runner between the wickets.”

Before the expiry, Jaiswal had anchored the Indian innings brilliantly, amassing 82 runs off 118 balls with 11 fours and a six.
The talented opener looked poised for a major milestone as he neared a well-deserved century.
However, disaster struck late in the day when a mix-up with Kohli led to his dismissal.
The incident unfolded when Jaiswal drove a full delivery from Scott Boland to mid-on and laid out for a quick single.

However, Kohli held back as he glanced at the ball for a moment. Pat Cummins pounced on the opportunity with a direct throw attempt that missed, but ‘keeper Alex Carey took advantage of the chaos, collected the ball and completed the run.
The dismissal proved costly and triggered a mini-collapse in the Indian batting line-up. From a strong position of 153/2, India stumbled to 164/5 on Day 2.
Night watch Akash Deep fell for a duck and the visitors faced a daunting deficit of 310 runs, with 111 needed to avoid the follow-on.
