Retailers call in after Christmas sales. Here’s what you need to know about Amazon, Walmart and more.

This holiday shopping season, Americans stepped up their purchases at retail stores, with many chains luring shoppers with big Black Friday discounts. But with the holidays now over, retailers are starting to roll out their post-Christmas sales aimed at luring customers into spending more.

Shoppers spent between $979.5 billion and $989 billion last month and in December, with retail sales up 2.5% to 3.5% from a year ago, according to an estimate from the National Retail Federation, the nation’s largest retail trade group.

Retailers are now looking to encourage more of the same as they wrap up the holidays with additional promotions after Christmas. This year’s shorter holiday shopping period put pressure on some retailers, some of whom also struggled to attract inflation-weary consumers through the doors.

“So far, the post-Christmas discounts appear to be a little bit bigger than last year,” GlobalData retail analyst Neil Saunders told CBS MoneyWatch. “Retailers are working hard to stimulate demand and get consumers to spend.”

He added: “Having said that, there’s not a dramatic difference. A lot of retailers managed inventory well this year so they don’t have a lot of stuff left to replace.”

Budget-conscious shoppers have also found great deals during a special hard year for some retailers, with store closings up 69% from a year earlier, according to research firm CoreSight.

Industry woes include the recent bankruptcy of popular chain The party cityis now holding a “All stores close Sale!” with everything discounted and up to 50% off. Same thing, Big Lots planning to hosted “going out of business” sales as its more than 900 locations fell through after the company’s sale to a private equity firm earlier this month.

Other national retailers also hold sales, but tie them to the season. Here is a selection.

Do products usually go on sale after Christmas?

Yes, retailers typically offer post-holiday sales to reduce inventory after Christmas. But this year, American shoppers have another reason to hit the mall or the computer in search of deals: the potential threat of higher prices on many items if President-elect Donald Trump imposes tariffs on imports.

Sticker-shocked consumers have seen some relief in recent months as inflation eased, but Trump’s promise to impose new rates on imports, once back at the White House, some experts have warned that prices could rise on a range of goods by 2025, including manufactured goodsChina toys, electronics and even raw oil imported from Canada.

The craft chain offers up to 75% discount on selected free space objects including photo frames, home decor, art or craft supplies, sewing, bead or jewelry making, and party supplies.

Lowes after Christmas sales

Lowe’s is holding a closeout cases on almost 500 products. The home improvement chain is offering up to 30% off select major appliances through January 8, 2025, as well as 30% off some holiday storage items. It also offers up to 40% off lights and ceiling fans and 50% off selected toiletries.

The target’s holiday approval cases launched Thursday and offers discounts of up to 50% on products including holiday decorations, clothing, shoes, beauty items and toys.

“We have deep discounts across our entire assortment to make it easy for everyone to find great deals and extend the joy of the holiday season,” Rick Gomez, the retailer’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said in a statement.

The beauty product supplier is offering up to 45% off jumbo versions of its hair care products and discounts on more than 1,200 items, from moisturizer gift sets to mascara.
