Liverpool vs Leicester LIVE: Premier League latest score and updates after Ayew goal shocks leaders early

Liverpool vs Leicester: Arne Slot enjoys Ruud van Nistelrooy reunion

League leaders Liverpool host Leicester City in the Premier League in the late Boxing Day kick-off tonight, with the hosts looking to extend their lead at the top.

Arne Slott’s side put in a brilliant performance to beat Tottenham 6-3 last time out, with that win taking their lead to four points along with their game in hand.

And they now face a Leicester side who have struggled for form of late, having lost 3-0 to Wolves last weekend in what was Ruud van Nistelrooy’s fourth game in charge.

The Foxes are in 17th place, just two points above the relegation places, ahead of a run of games that also includes games against Manchester City and Aston Villa.

26′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

So almost an equalizer twice! Mac Allister and Nunez combine, Salah cuts a shot off the heels of Kristiansen, and it runs over Stolarczyk…and into the roof of the net! Another Alexander-Arnold corner is poor, but the next delivery finds Robertson’s header, he hits the post, it bounces off the keeper’s arms and behind for another corner!

It could easily have been an own goal, a Robertson goal or a tap-in for another red shirt, but the Foxes make their fortune this time.

24′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

Nunez whips a shot into a defender, then Gakpo is played in by Robertson and his first touch is excellent – then it bounces off his knee instead of falling kindly to shoot. Maybe also offside, but the goalkeeper is quickly out.

Liverpool began to raise their game and pace a bit more, but Leicester look to be a threat on the break – a pass from Mavididi almost freed Daka into the box.

Gakpo weaves past another challenge on his right foot and fires fiercely, but this time it’s over the bar and into the Cup.

20′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

It’s…getting a little foggy again. Not that Liverpool can blame this slow start on it, but it’s getting a little hard to see what’s going on. Gravenberch fouls Ayew and the home support are starting to get a little annoyed at the length of time it takes every time Leicester have a set-piece.

Salah spins his man and finds Jones in the box, but another cross is cleared and Stolarczyk easily claims the next. 72% possession for Liverpool so far but no big chances since the early combination of Salah and Jones.

16′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

Alexander-Arnold delivers a cross which ends up in a corner. Interesting set-up from the Reds for the set-piece, with five beyond the far post looking to run in…it’s cleared at the near post by the first man.

Mac Allister is the man in the middle who is currently trying to add some steel and pace to the home side’s game as it has been a bit passive so far.

12′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

Darwin Nunez nods one of the goals for the Reds after a Robertson cross.

Our senior football correspondent Richard Jolly is at Anfield:

“So much for the control that Arne Slot wanted. Liverpool’s last three league games have ended 3-3, 2-2 and 6-3, and they are already 1-0 down. Jordan Ayew’s early goal has given Leicester a surprise lead. The last time Leicester visited Anfield in the Premier League, Liverpool’s match winner was Wout Faes with two own goals. But he’s not playing tonight, unfortunately for them.”

8′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

No immediate response from the hosts – it’s Leicester who have the next couple of attacks, Mavididi runs through the middle and can’t quite get onto a high pass, then Justin fires over the bar after a corner was half-cleared.

The ball also hit Gakpo’s hand somewhere in the corner, but it was a deflection as he was facing the other way, so there was no danger of a penalty. Liverpool are certainly not up to speed yet.

GOAL! 6′ – Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

It wasn’t in the script! Leicester have taken the lead! Mavididi beats Alexander-Arnold and crosses, Ayew shoulders Andy Robertson out of the way and turns to shoot low past Alisson, into the bottom corner! His 50th goal in English football, Foxes lead 1-0!

4′ – Liverpool 0-0 Leicester

Very early for a “should be ahead” post but…Liverpool should be ahead. A deep cross from the left finds Salah on the right and his first shot is parried, it falls to Curtis Jones and he looks like he’s just going to roll it in…but when he moves it from one foot to the other , it seems that to get a little stuck under him, the keeper is quickly out and Leicester get the bodies back to clear.

1′ – Liverpool 0-0 Leicester

The fog is thick but seems to have cleared a bit in the past hour or so. Liverpool in red, kicked against the Kop in the first half after Leicester won the toss.

Liverpool v Leicester – live

As for Leicester, they started the Boxing Day round outside the bottom three – but with Wolves beating Manchester United, they have leapfrogged them.

A point separates the sides, with the Foxes now 18th but Wolves having the better goal difference.

Victory at Anfield for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side will see them draw level with Everton and Crystal Palace, while of course they overtake Wolves. A big question, nonetheless.
