Liverpool are hoping to avoid a pitch inspection ahead of their Premier League game against Leicester City tonight despite heavy fog engulfing Merseyside on Boxing Day.

The Reds host Leicester in today’s evening kick-off hoping to maintain their lead at the top of the table, but thick fog has settled over the region over the past 24 hours. However, club officials insist there was no inspection of any kind ahead of the 5pm game. 4:30 p.m.

The club’s LFC Help account on X (formerly Twitter) stated: “If you are coming to the game today please make sure you leave earlier than normal due to foggy conditions in and around Anfield stadium. Please take care when travels.”

The Met Office reports that the fog will continue throughout the evening, with their website saying: “Remaining cloudy this evening and overnight with light rain and drizzle, especially over higher ground. Becoming misty in places with generally gloomy conditions for many. Remaining frost-free with light winds throughout the region. Minimum temperature 4 °C”.

Liverpool have already seen one game canceled this season, with the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park postponed in early December due to Storm Darragh.

The Reds face Leicester tonight before traveling to London to take on West Ham United on Sunday. They are then in action at Anfield on January 5 against Manchester United.

Tranmere Rovers saw their game against Accrington Stanley postponed due to the foggy weather. The game at Prenton Park was due to kick off at 3pm but was called off shortly after 2pm.

The League Two club took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the news, saying: “We can confirm that the match referee has decided that today’s match has been postponed due to the foggy conditions. Tickets will still be valid for the rearranged match, which will be arranged in due course. Thank you for your patience in this matter and we apologize for the inconvenience.”
