‘Bad Monkey’ renewed for Season 2 on Apple TV+

Bad monkey will come back.

The Bill Lawrence series, based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name, has been renewed for a second season on Apple TV+, with Vince Vaughn set to return.

“I hope people know that Carl Hiaasen is an idol of mine and an inspiration to me as a writer,” the showrunner and executive producer said in a statement. “Getting to continue to tell his story with Vince Vaughn and this amazing cast, at least the characters who are still alive, is very exciting. I’m very grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ and Warner Bros, as well like the entire team that helps bring this show to life.”

The acclaimed comedy follows Vaughn’s Andrew Yancy, who has been dismissed from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys, according to the logline. When he stumbles upon a case that begins when a human arm is fished up by tourists, he realizes that if he can prove murder, he will be a cop again.

“Since Bad monkey first debuted on Apple TV+, this highly entertaining series became an instant fan favorite,” Matt Cherniss, head of programming for the streamer, said in a statement. “Led by the inimitable Vince Vaughn as Andrew Yancy, along with a brilliant ensemble cast, we can’t wait for everyone to experience more fun, sun-drenched beach adventures from the mind of Bill Lawrence as the temperature rises even higher in the next chapter of this gripping murder mystery.”

The ensemble cast includes L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet and Jodie Turner-Smith. John Ortiz, Zach Braff, Ashley Nicole Black, Scott Glenn and Charlotte Lawrence guest star.

While talking to The Hollywood ReporterLawrence explained as he hung up Bad monkey for Apple, he had a three-season arc in mind for the character of Andrew, who he wanted to be and where he wanted to go.

“They were really receptive to it,” he said. β€œIt’s challenging right now to do shows and especially to pick up your life and do it. We both moved to Florida! It was insane. Hot in Florida is not hot like other places; it’s like someone has put a bag of wet cement on your shoulders. It is hot.”

When asked if he would be up for more seasons after the first, Vaughn said he would be. “I love the character, the world, the tone β€” all of it. So I think it would be exciting, of course, with Bill to create it, to have a continuation and see where the character goes.”

Bad monkey Season 1 is streaming on Apple TV+ now.
