FULL RAIN and SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS through Thursday

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – It’s shaping up to be a rainy Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. An isolated severe storm is possible later today, but Thursday is the day to watch for widespread severe weather.

Future outlook for the next 36 hours

Future outlook for the next 36 hours

An area of low pressure will draw a frontal boundary to the south into ArkLaTex today. Temperatures will be in the 50s this morning, ending in the mid to upper 60s tonight.

Thunderstorms will take advantage of a small amount of wind shear and warm air in the late afternoon and early evening. It is in the 4-10 pm window later today that these ingredients could bring a strong storm or two capable of damaging wind gusts or large hail to East Texas. Severe weather will subside quickly after 10 p.m., as temperatures cool into the 50s overnight.

1 to 2 inches of rain will be possible, with isolated higher amounts. While the flood threat is low, there may be some high water on some roads on Christmas morning.

Christmas Day starts with an hour or two of rain and drizzle. Expect better weather in the late morning and afternoon, with dry air ending precipitation in most areas by midday. If you have any new Christmas toys you’re excited to take outside, you should be able to do so Wednesday afternoon and evening with temperatures heading into the 60s on Christmas Day.

The more worrisome setup for potentially severe weather arrives Thursday afternoon/evening. Strong wind shear and relatively warm temperatures in late December will provide a favorable setup for damaging winds and a few tornadoes. We will have more on this in the coming days.

Friday is likely to be drier and milder, and looks set for a final round of rain sometime Saturday, with dry and warm weather on Sunday. Another round of rain and storms could bring cooler weather into the new year.
