FDA Raises Costco Egg Recall Classification to Highest Risk Level. What to know

The Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of eggs sold at Costco as Level Ithe highest level available.

While the eggs weren’t sold at any Florida Costco, with residents heading out of state for the holidays, it pays to double-check what you’re eating or using. The eggs were sold in several states across the Southeast.

The recall of the eggs was due to potential salmonella contamination.

Which eggs are being recalled?

ONE voluntary recall was issued November 27 for 10,800 cartons of Beautiful Brook Farms eggs sold below Kirkland signature Organic grass field.

The revocation applies to 24-count packages of Kirkland Signature Organic Pature Raised 24-count eggs with a UPC of 9661910680. Cartons are marked with Julian code 327 and an expiration date of January 5, 2025.

The information is on the side of the plastic egg cartons.

Why are Kirkland eggs being recalled?

Handsome Brook Farms voluntarily issued one recall for the eggssold under the Kirkland Signature brand because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, said the company’s announcement.

“Egg from one positive Salmonella environment were sent for distribution to retail facilities,” the FDA said.

“The recall was initiated after the company determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution was instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging. Additional supply chain checks and retraining are being put in place to prevent a recurrence,” the company said in a November statement.

The FDA classifies egg recalls as Level 1. What is Level I?

FDA has classified recall as level 1.

ONE Level 1 – also called a Class 1 – recall is “a situation in which there is a reasonable likelihood that the use of or exposure to an offending product will cause serious health consequences or death,” the FDA said on its website.
