Christmas Eve storm brings snow and strong winds to the Lake Tahoe area

A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Greater Lake Tahoe area, warning of significant snowfall and strong winds expected on Christmas Eve. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service in Reno, is in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Snowfall is expected above 6,500 feet, with accumulations ranging from 2 to 6 inches west of Highway 89 and up to 12 inches along the highest peaks. At sea level, up to 2 inches of snow is expected. Ridge winds could gust as high as 90 mph, while southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 mph can produce gusts up to 40 mph, leading to wave heights between 1 to 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.

The advisory covers the cities of Tahoe City, Stateline, South Lake Tahoe, Markleeville, Incline Village, Glenbrook and Truckee.

The National Weather Service said, “Plan for slick road conditions. The hazardous conditions could affect holiday travel as well as Tuesday morning and evening commutes.”

Strong winds could also cause damage to trees and power lines, the service warned.

Residents and travelers are advised to slow down and use caution when traveling. For the latest road conditions, individuals can call 511 for updates specific to their state.
