Winter driving guide: Tips from the weather service for safe and healthy journeys

Winter weather can make driving treacherous, leading to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and over 480,000 injuries each year. When traveling in snow or freezing weather, prioritize safety by slowing down. In near-freezing temperatures, it’s safest to assume icy road conditions and adjust your driving accordingly. Be careful of ice that collects on power lines or tree branches, which can lead to break and fall hazards. If possible, avoid driving in such conditions. If you must venture out, choose routes with fewer trees and power lines. Never touch a downed power line and call 911 immediately if you encounter one. Here are additional tips for driving in winter weather:

Share your travel plans:

When traveling out of town in dangerous winter weather, inform your family or friends of your destination, planned route and estimated time of arrival.

Prepare your vehicle:

Make sure your gas tank is full and stock your vehicle with essential winter supplies, including a windshield wiper, jump leads, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.

Stay calm when stranded:

If you get stranded, stay calm. Inform someone of your situation and location. Avoid trying to go to safety. State that you need help by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror, and make your vehicle more visible by using dome lights and turn signals

Be aware of snowplows:

Watch for snowplows and give them plenty of room to pass. Only overhaul a plow when you have a clear view of the road ahead.

Check road conditions:

Before embarking on your journey, check current road conditions to make informed travel decisions.

These winter driving tips from the weather service are your key to safer travel on snowy roads. By following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure your well-being in challenging winter weather.
