Boxing’s fallen champion happier after escaping ‘One of the hardest places’ on earth

A few weeks ago, Gervonta Davis shocked the boxing world by announcing his retirement from the sport next year. Only 30 years old, fans expected Tank to rule the lightweight division for a few more years. However, the WBA lightweight champion had other ideas. After all, boxing is not an easy sport.

The constant wear and tear, the punishment your body has to go through, the mental pressure, it’s all connected. While the boxing world somewhat condemned Tank’s decision to leave the sport in his prime, former IBF flyweight champion Sunny Edwards understands the WBA champion’s decision. The Surrey native himself announced his retirement from the sport after a hell of a fight against Galal Yafai on November 30 and know what it feels like to fall in love with the sport.

At just 28 years and 23 fights, Edwards announced his retirement after a defeat against Yafai. In the post-match interview, he revealed how he is going through multiple injuries and his “The body is falling apart.” That’s why he can relate to Gervonta Davis and claimed, “We probably become more self-aware in this generation than anything else about what this world is like and what we’re doing it all for.”

However, the Surrey native knows it’s not an easy decision. But at the end of the day it’s just a sport and a person should know when to give up. “Boxing is your vehicle and just by the nature of the Beast it can never be forever. You’re always on a clock against yourself and when you think you’ve done enough. When you think that, who can tell you otherwise? ” thought the fallen master who had also previously been beaten by Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez prior to his loss to Yafai.

The former IBF flyweight champion further explained, “Boxing is probably one of the hardest places in the world to be in.” He talked about how a 36-minute match can be the hardest thing a person can do because “The moment you can no longer defend yourself, you’re very vulnerable. And yes, if that’s the case, then that’s the case. If he (Davis) wants to break and come back, then that’s the case,” because at the end of the day, every boxer is still human.

Sunny Edwards further shared how his retirement has made his family much happier and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters. While Edwards is still lukewarm about boxing, Gervonta Davis doesn’t feel the same and considers it all worthless.

In an interview with Boxing Live, Gervonata Davis revealed that the sport has left a lasting effect on his mental health. He has to go away for the sake of his family and his two daughters. “I want to go to therapy, right? But I feel like if I do therapy, it would take away the fire that I have inside me. I want to get everything out of me so that I never think about fighting again. I don’t think sometimes to get angry. Because I have two daughters, I want to be a lot softer, to be more humble and stuff.” Gervonta Davis confessed.
