Gervonta Davis reveals the real reason he is retiring from boxing

Gervonta Davis caused quite a stir when he recently announced that he plans to retire in 2025.

The American superstar has become one of the biggest names in the sport due to his incredible knockout power and his no nonsense attitude.

He is the reigning WBA lightweight champion who has most recently defended it against Frank Martinwhile also defeating the likes of Ryan Garcia, Leo Santa Cruz and Rolly Romero during his career.

He returns to action in March when he makes the latest defense of his belt against Lamont Roach, but it could be the beginning of the end for ‘Tank’ following his shock comments.

Davis plans to face Roach and then compete just twice more during the year before hanging up the gloves at the end of 2025.

Although he first said he planned to quit boxing because it was ‘rubbish’, a more honest ‘Tank’ has now explained Dan Canobbio just the real reason he’s made that decision, revealing that he feels he’ll lose his fire as he becomes ‘softer and more humble.’

“I don’t want to box anymore because I want to go to therapy, but I feel like if I do therapy, it will take away the fire that I have inside of me.

“I want everything out of me where I don’t think about fighting again or even getting angry. I have two daughters, I want to be much softer and more humble.”

‘Tank’ is not the first fighter over the years to announce plans for a surprise retirement, with many choosing to continue in the end.

It could prove to be different for Davis, and with one eye apparently already retired, he has named the fighters he wants to take on before he retires from the sport.
