Beluga Whale Has Adorable Reaction to Proposal at Georgia Aquarium (Exclusive)

A beluga whale has gone viral for its adorable reaction to a proposal that took place near its aquarium.

Thanks to a 16-year-old female whale named Qinu, Olivia Walsh and Gavin Hulberg’s engagement at Georgia Aquarium Wednesday, December 18 will be a moment they will cherish forever.

“The most perfect proposal I could have asked for ,” Walsh captioned his proposal video on TikTok, which currently has more than 7 million views and 2 million likes.

In the video, Walsh and Hulberg are posing for a photo in front of the beluga exhibit when Hulberg suddenly drops to one knee to propose, prompting onlookers to gasp and erupt with “aahs.” Even Qinu looked equally surprised—her jaw dropped at the exact moment Hulberg pulled out a diamond engagement ring.

Aquarium-goers began to cheer as Walsh covered his face in shock. After she said “yes”, she hugged her fiancé tightly as Qinu appeared to smile in the background before spinning and swimming away.

In her caption, the bride-to-be said she has been a beluga whale trainee for the past three months. Her supervisor tells PEOPLE exclusively that Hulberg reached out to another beluga training team to “help figure out something special for her.”

“Being a beluga training intern at the Georgia Aquarium involves a lot of teaching the animals to participate in their own volunteer health care, for research, guest programs, and for mental and physical stimulation. There are currently five beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium and training is done with all of them !” Katie Lorenz, associate curator of mammals and birds, and mammal and bird intern supervisor at the Georgia Aquarium, tells PEOPLE.

She further notes, “Qinu’s behavior at the window was her own—she was not intentionally trained to have any kind of ‘reaction.'”

Commenters on TikTok loved Qinu’s heartfelt heartfelt response and expressed shock at the proposal.

“Beluga should be invited to the wedding ,” the official Play-Doh account commented under the video.

“The whale HAS to be officiating the wedding now,” wrote another, while another TikToker added: “The whale has to be a bridesmaid at this point.”

Similar proposals have previously been made at the aquarium, but only for the staff. To see Qinu and other cute beluga whales, visit the Georgia Aquarium or watch their live beluga webcam. Fans can also follow @GeorgiaAquarium on TikTok and Instagram for more moments behind the scenes.
