Josh Allen Injury: What Happened vs. Patriots, and what the Bills QB said about it

The Buffalo Bills quarterback appeared to suffer an injury to his right arm early in the fourth quarter of the team’s 24-21 victory over the New England Patriots. After taking off on a 2nd and 10 play, Allen was seen flexing his right hand after being tackled to the ground.

Fortunately for the Bills quarterback, the injury was not as serious as it appeared. Just like a few weeks ago, Allen gave his elbow and hit his funny bone nerve just right. The end result was a temporary loss of feeling in his hand.

“Little elbow. I don’t know if it was the elbow, the helmet or the ground, but I lost feeling in my hand,” Allen told the media postgame. “Just hit the funny bone nerve.”

On the play after the hit to the funny bone nerve, Allen threw a deep ball downfield to Dalton Kincaid. The delivery was errant and seemed to come out of his hand funny. The quarterback explained that the poor throw was because he had no feeling in his hand on the attempt.

“Went to throw the ball and had no feeling in my hand…,” Allen said. “It’s hard to throw without feeling in the hand.”

Buffalo would throw the ball away while the quarterback worked to get blood flow back. According to Allen, it took anywhere from five to ten minutes for feeling to return to his hand.

“It took a good five to 10 minutes (to get the feeling back),” Allen told the outlet. “Just make sure you try to get some blood flow in there and some activation. When it’s cold like that too, the more you leave it out, the number gets the whole hand. It was a weird feeling. Good thing it’s gone now.”

Buffalo’s quarterback was able to return to the game on the offense’s next series, but acknowledged that he likely would have missed some time if the offense had to take the field quickly.

“Depending on when we got the ball back,” Allen said when asked if there was any doubt he would return to the game. “Fortunately, it was a longer drive where I could get some feeling and sensation back in my hand. If we got a sudden change, I probably wouldn’t have been out there.”

Buffalo’s defense was on the field for an extended period after the hit Allen took to his elbow. The defense scored a touchdown on a reverse Drake Maye pass that bounced off his running back’s hands. The unit then returned to the field for a five game series. By the time the Patriots had punted, Allen was ready to return to the game.

Allen had an off-day in the Bills’ 24-21 win. He completed 16-of-29 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception while rushing for 30 yards on six attempts. While Allen didn’t necessarily play up to his standard, the team found a way to win and the quarterback avoided any kind of serious injury.
