What’s next for Kroger amid a merger?

CINCINNATI (Cincinnati Business Courier) – Kroger Co. unveiled plans to transform the company, and perhaps the grocery industry, on Oct. 14, 2022. That’s when it and Albertsons Cos. Inc. agreed on the largest acquisition in US supermarket history.

Kroger, the nation’s largest operator of brick-and-mortar supermarkets, would buy Albertsons, the second-largest operator, for $24.6 billion and merge it with Kroger’s operations. The deal will combine downtown-based Kroger and its 2,722 stores with Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons and the 2,271 stores it operates.

More than two years later, none of that materialized.
