ForbesToday’s ‘Word’ #1281 Hints, Clues and Answer for Saturday, December 21st

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. Please – nicely – put a penny in the old man’s hat. Although I suppose giving an old beggar a penny might not be met with much gratitude. A penny doesn’t go quite as far as it did when that Christmas tune was written. The first cases of Christmas is coming was published in 1885, although it is likely that the song had been around for some time before then. There is no known composer or lyricist, so it’s actually part of folklore at this point.

Oddly, when you factor in inflation, a penny in 1885 would only be worth 33 cents now, so it wasn’t exactly a lot even then. You have to go back to about 1838 for a penny to be worth the equivalent of a dollar today.

Of course, if we’re talking about British pennies, a penny in 1885 would be worth £1.61 in today’s British pounds. It is a much more generous sum.

Okay, enough about that. Order time!

Word analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

SUPER was not a great guess, but I’ve been thinking about it lately Superman trailer and it seemed like a decent opener. With 237 solutions remaining, I thought wrong. I chose RATIO to see if I could move the ‘R’ to green and exclude the rest of the vowels (except Y, which is only a semi-vowel). At this point I knew the word had to have an ‘A’ so I went with DRAWN and luckily showed four green boxes. There was only one word left: BRAWN for the win! There have been a lot of ‘B’ words lately. I should have gone with that.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “brown” comes from Old French “brown”meaning “fleshy part, muscle”, which itself derives from late Latin “brachium” means “arm” (from classical Latin “brachium”). Over time, “brawn” came to refer to physical strength or muscularity in English, evolving from its original association with flesh or muscle.
