Exclusive: Arsenal wonderkid has ‘impressed staff’ despite playing in new position

I think the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri has taken some of the limelight away from Lewis-Skelly a little bit and it has allowed him to go under the radar, which could be a good thing for a young player.

But when you look at it, it is Lewis-Skelly who have now been given starts in the Champions League and Premier League, not Nwaneri.

That says a lot about how Arsenal and Mikel Arteta view him. It’s not just his skills that have gotten him to where he is, but it’s also his brain. He is seen as someone who can take everything on board and can play with a maturity far beyond his years.

It is something that has impressed the staff at Arsenal. They appreciate how calm he is and how clearly he thinks things through. I think you can also see that in the way he plays.

Arteta has clearly seen something in him that makes him see him as a reverse left-back in the system he plays. It is still something relatively new to Lewis-Skelly, who has come through the academy as a midfielder.

But the way he’s taken to it shows how good of a player he is and I definitely think it’s the position we’ll continue to see him operate in for the next few seasons.
