‘I’m not done with it yet’

It’s been more than three decades since writer-director Amy Heckerling’s baby-babbling comedy See who’s talking hit the big screen starring Kirstie Alley as an unexpected expectant mother to Mikey, a little one whose inner thoughts are narrated by none other than Bruce Willis. It was a huge box office success, grossing $297 million worldwide on a budget of just $7.5 million, and spawned numerous follow-ups – including two film sequels (1990s) See who’s talking too and the 1993s Look who’s talking now), and a television spin-off series, Baby Talk.

But more can come from it LWTCU (See who’s talking cinematic universe). talking with Empire for our 35th anniversary feature on the original film, Heckerling revealed that she is working on a new script within the franchise. “Who knows if it will become a ‘thing,'” says the filmmaker. “But I’m excited. I’m not done with (See who’s talking) yet.”

Heckerling is writing the new script with his daughter Mollie, who was actually the inspiration for the original film back in 1985. “She was looking at us, we were looking at her,” the director recalls one morning as she and her husband ate breakfast across the table from baby Mollie in a high chair. “Suddenly (we) started ad-libbing things she could say. In my mind I thought, ‘Oh no. This is going to be my next film.” It marked a shift in tone from Heckerling’s previous work, including the violent teen film Fast times at Ridgemont High. The concept felt “a bit eye-catching”, she says. “Family-oriented and sweet – and I don’t feel that’s me. But that was the idea I had.” And a pretty big one it was.
