Friday snowstorm in Mass. How much do we get? – NBC Boston

As we move through this Thursday, enjoy the sun! Why, you ask? We’re tracking cloudy, cold weather with a touch of snow heading into the weekend!

On Thursday we will get a lot of sunshine mixed with clouds. High temperatures will be in the mid 40s. The low temperatures will drop to near freezing overnight.

Now let’s talk about some snow!

Our focus has been on a developing storm far offshore, which at first appeared to be too distant to make much of a fuss. But now it looks like its very presence will distort the weather and spawn a few showers early Friday.

The problem is that colder air will move in during the day, starting in southern New Hampshire and sweeping to the South Shore and out through Cape Cod late in the day and evening. So initially we’ll be in good shape with mostly rain showers (and snow melting as it falls) but as the cold moves in we’ll gradually change to snow and the roads could be slick during and after the evening commute .

We are seeing some spots in the 1-3-inch range away from shore and closer to a coating to an inch near shore. Almost unnoticeable in a winter that sees a lot of snow, but in one that hasn’t seen much — and coming during the holidays — this will surprise some.

There is still some uncertainty with this forecast, mainly due to the track of the storm. If low pressure tracks further east off our coast, we may have a higher likelihood of snow, even for the Cape and Islands. But if they made tracks further west towards our coast, our snow potential would be cut down significantly and we could end up with more rain.

For now, as we see it, we could see between a coating of up to 2 inches of snow IN SPOTS. The forecast can and will change. Stay with us for updates.

On Saturday, there is a chance of a few snow showers, but most of the day will offer a lot of clouds and very cold weather. In fact, highs will be near freezing. Low temperatures will drop into the teens. Wind chill values will be in the single digits.

A strengthening shot of cold weather from Canada will settle in on Sunday, giving way to highs in the mid 20s and lows in the teens! Collect together.

Looking ahead to Christmas Day, a few of us could see a rain/snow mix. It is still too early to talk about potential accumulations. Morning temperatures will be in the upper 20s. Highs will be in the upper 30s.
