NBA scoring efficiency down nearly two points per 100 possessions compared to last season

NBA teams are scoring nearly two fewer points per 100 possessions this season compared to last season, which has come in the face of criticism of the game, where there is a belief that the league has over-indexed on offense.

“I feel like all the talk this season has been about how teams have solved offense, and that’s the problem with the NBA.” Jared Dubin said on RealGM Radio. Dubin has previously written about the trend at Substack. “And the whole thing is just everybody taking and making too many threes. And we’ve got to figure out ways to make the defense better. The defense is better this season.

“Scoring is down almost two points per 100 possessions. It’s the first time in a while that it’s gone down, at least a significant drop. That’s a pretty big year-over-year difference to go up or down by two points per 100 possessions Generally, offenses get a little better over the course of a season, but to go up two full points per 100 possessions shows that type year over year improvement we have seen in some seasons.

“We’ve also seen some of the best defenses in recent times.”

Dubin added that the Oklahoma City Thunder is one of the best in NBA history compared to the league average.
