The Met Office issued a new wind warning on Wednesday.

The yellow warning is in place between 07:00 and 21:00 on Saturday 21 December and covers several areas across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

People in affected areas have been told that some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely, with some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities likely to be affected by splashes and/or large waves.

Journeys will take longer, with bus and train services likely to be affected and there likely to be delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, as well as a small chance of isolated, short-term power outages, the weather agency said.

Provides additional details about the nature of the threat Met Office says on its website: “Strong westerly winds are expected to develop throughout Saturday, with gusts of 50-60 mph developing fairly widely across this region.

“This has the potential to cause delays to public transport and some disruption to the road network, which could have a greater impact than usual given the busier travel weekend before Christmas. Dangerous coastal conditions are also expected, with large waves an added danger. “

A separate warning covering areas in the Highlands & Eilean Siar, Orkney & Shetland and Strathclyde will also be in force from 6pm. some public transport delays are likely and travel disruption on the roads.

“However, there is a slight chance of significant delays or even cancellations of services, including ferries and flights, while some roads and bridges may be closed,” the warning reads.

The Met Office also warns that there is “a small chance of injury and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties”.

“Very strong westerly winds are expected to develop during Saturday in association with a deep area of ​​low pressure, with gusts of 65-75 mph expected,” the government agency warned.

“There is a small chance that gusts in excess of 80 mph could occur in this region.

“There is most likely some minor disruption on the roads and delays to ferry services, but there is a small chance of significant disruption, including cancellations of ferry services, and more significant delays due to overturned vehicles and closed embankments.

“A busier-than-usual travel period in the run-up to Christmas is also a factor which could result in an increased chance of impacts. Dangerous coastal conditions can also be expected, with large waves an added hazard, particularly in relation to causeways,” it adds.
