Sonic the Hedgehog director says if Robotnik will be recast in the future

Despite a large number of stars appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog movie, like Idris Elba as Knuckles and James Marsden as Tom, one stands out: Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik aka Eggman. Loosely adapted from the character of the same name in the original Sonic the HedgehogCarrey brought out the selfish side of the brilliant doctor in a way that audiences adored. Still, his comments about retirement have left some wondering what might happen to the character in the future. Fortunately, director Jeff Fowler gave us at ComicBook some insight into the subject matter and what to expect.

When asked about a potential recasting of Robotnik and a possible replacement of the villain in the future of the series, Fowler noted, “Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone but Jim playing Robotnik. But where we go from here, it’s going to take a lot of discussion about what the next steps are, and much of that will obviously have to wait until this (Sonic the Hedgehog 3) comes out and we see where things land.”

Furthermore, we asked if there were any ideas for where the series could go after-Sonic 3. In response, Jeff said, “Oh, I’m always getting ideas.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 marks Carrey’s third time in the role, having appeared as the character throughout the trilogy. This time, however, Carrey will also play Dr. Gerald Robotnik, his character’s grandfather. Gerald is in the games and presumably in the movies the creator of the Space Colony ARK and Shadow the Hedgehog who is Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s main antagonist and is voiced by Keanu Reeves.

Given Carrey’s recurring talk of retirement, there is still a possibility that Dr. Robotnik may not return in the future. The good news is that there are plenty of potential villains in the Sonic universe to fill the void. Characters like Sonic CD‘s Metal Sonic, Shadow the Hedgehog‘s Black Doom, and Sonic adventure‘s Chaos would be good choices. Note that Shadow the Hedgehog is the primary antagonist for Sonic the Hedgehog 3which puts Dr. Robotnik in the backseat, which could also be the format for future films.

Fans of Jim Carrey’s eccentric version of Dr. Robotnik will surely be pleased to know that as long as he is interested, the character will continue to appear and be played by him. Carrey’s household status always promises plenty of laughs, from the unforgettable Dumber and dumber to the suave Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Carrey himself has noted in the past that he has intentions to retire, but has also confirmed that he would be open to returning when a good script or project presents itself.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 rolls into theaters on December 20. For all the coverage of the blue blur that comes and goes Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and beyond that, ComicBook will have you covered.
