Moment Instagram influencer’s brand new £10,000 Hermes Birkin bag is stolen by female thief who sneaked into dressing room as victim tried on clothes inside Manière De Voir

An influencer has shared the ‘gut-wrenching’ moment her brand new Birkin bag was stolen from her while trying on clothes in a London designer store.

Model Janice Joostema, who boasts 1.2 million followers on Instagram, posted CCTV of the shocking moment her shoulder bag was pulled off as she undressed in a VIP changing room at Manière De Voir in Oxford Street.

The influencer’s purse was a red Hermes JPG Shoulder Birkin, which retails for more than £10,000 online.

It comes amid a terrifying spate of designer handbag thefts, with robbers targeting £600,000 worth of products from two London showrooms just three weeks apart.

Footage shows the thief, dressed in a long white coat, prowling around the high-end store, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. Moments later, she is seen brazenly opening the dressing room door and sneaking inside.

Ms Joostema claims she was turned away because the windows looked onto Oxford Street and she put on a top, adding: ‘She probably even saw me come topless into the room and grabbed it.’

The thief is seen going in and out of the dressing room for a moment before he suddenly appears with the Birkin bag on his arm. Trying to start a quick escape, her other bag got caught in the doorknob.

Eventually, she freed herself, ran down the stairs and fled the building with the coveted purse that wealthy bag lovers are clamoring to buy.

Completely stunned, a panicked Mrs Joostema can then be seen sprinting out of the dressing room trying to find out what had happened.

Made from materials such as crocodile and alligator skin, as well as luxurious leathers with luxury names such as Tadelakt and Monsieur Grainee, Birkin bags take at least 18 hours to handcraft.

The influencer issued a stark warning to Londoners when she shared the shocking footage.

She wrote: ‘Londoners beware. Thieves enter the dressing rooms when they see you turned, they watch you while you change and are naked, just to steal your belongings.

‘My brand new Hermes shoulder Birkin that I had less than a week was stolen while I was being turned around in this room changing into a top I turned away from the door as the room is only windows.

‘She poked her head in twice, I was naive and thought maybe she was innocently looking for the bathroom or something.’

Joostema said she was ‘unharmed’ but her passport was stolen by ‘the hands of this selfish person’. She was forced to cancel her holiday to Switzerland.

The model added: “To work so hard for something and it’s taken like this is gut-wrenching, for someone to buy such things is a big deal, it’s no small thing and I don’t want to be materialistic but it’s human morality and the principle of the value of money, and it cuts deep for someone who has always dreamed of having an Hermès bag, and it is taken that way.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘On Tuesday 17 December, following the release of a video of the incident, officers contacted the victim of a theft which took place inside a shop in Oxford Street.

‘No arrests have been made at this time. This case is under investigation.’

It comes just two weeks after two masked robbers broke into a designer showroom and made off with luxury handbags worth ‘thousands of pounds’ during what the owner believes was a ‘targeted’ four-minute robbery.

Evey Amery, a luxury consignment seller, was left feeling “sick” and “horrified” after discovering her north London showroom had been stripped of expensive, pre-loved Chanel, Hermes and Dior bags in a ” aggressive” raid late at night on December 3rd.

Her robbery comes just three weeks after three men stole £500,000 worth of luxury goods from a handbag store called Sellier in Belgravia.

Police did not treat the robberies as linked, but word has spread across the industry, with shops now on alert in the run-up to Christmas when the black market is in full swing.

Mrs Amery, who has owned her business Eveyspreloved since 2021, found it deeply ‘disturbing’ to see CCTV of the robbery but was grateful she was not inside at the time.

In exclusive footage obtained by MailOnline, two masked robbers were seen trying to break into the showroom at 22.40.

The black-clad robbers, who were carrying bags and tools, were seen violently trying to kick down the door. But when they couldn’t break through the door with their body weight, they use what appears to be a crowbar or similar tool to pry the door open.

Less than four minutes later, they reappear on CCTV, walking out with duffel bags stuffed with ‘dozens and dozens’ of designer bags in love, including several from luxury brand Chanel. Cartier watches were also reportedly stolen during the shock theft.

That heist came after three men stole £500,000 worth of designer goods from another luxury consignment shop in a raid that again took just under four minutes last month.

Luxury shipping has gained considerable popularity in recent years. It allows buyers to grab used luxury goods at a cheaper price.

Shocking footage shows the trio dressed in black smashing through the front window and stealing luxury items inside the Sellier store on November 13.

In the CCTV footage, two of the men could be seen breaking into the shop before starting to take as much as they could.

They stuffed clothes and other luxury items into bags before quickly leaving the store.

Blood was found at the scene by police officers who arrived just five minutes after the burglary happened at 1.50am on November 13.

The raided store in upmarket Belgravia already sells well-loved luxury items and among the items stolen were six luxury bags which could have a combined value of £40,000.

This included four Chanel bags, a Hermes Kelly 35 and a Hermes Birkin, currently selling for £14,000 online.

The third man was waiting outside the door on a motorbike which served as their escape route as they drove off with the stolen goods.
