Phoenix man arrested, charged with aggravated assault in Jan. 6 Capitol riot

PHOENIX (AZ family) – A man from Phoenix has turned himself in for allegedly assaulting officers during the riot on January 6, 2021 at the US capital.

Federal authorities announced that 35-year-old David Caleb Crosby was taken into custody by the FBI in Phoenix on Wednesday.

According to court documents, Crosby allegedly confronted officers trying to hold a police line on the US Capitol’s Lower West Plaza. He allegedly used “his back and body to repeatedly hit bike racks that serve as police barricades,” officials said.

Recorded videos reportedly show Crosby repeatedly backing into the police line, even as officers pushed him away and told him to back up. Two officers used a “super soaker” to spray chemicals in an attempt to get Crosby to pull away.

However, investigators say after he was sprayed, he continued to ram his back into the police line and encouraged other people to do the same. Police eventually pulled him over the top of the barricades and detained him.

“His alleged actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the United States Congress convened to determine and count the electoral votes associated with the 2020 presidential election,” investigators said in a statement.

Crosby is charged with the following:

  • Assaulting, resisting or obstructing certain officers
  • Entry and stay in a restricted building or lot
  • Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or area
  • Disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds
  • Engages in an act of physical violence on the grounds or any of the Capitol buildings

He is also the 20th person arrested in connection with the Capitol violation who is from Arizona or has Arizona ties.

Since the Capitol riot, more than 1,500 people have been charged in nearly every state. Over 590 people were charged with assault or obstructing law enforcement.

Crosby will make his first appearance in the District of Arizona. Anyone with tips can call 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or visit tips.fbi.gov.
