Clemson falls to rival Gamecocks in overtime

COLUMBIA – South Carolina took down the no. 25 Clemson 91-88 in overtime Tuesday night inside Colonial Life Arena. It is the second game in a row that the Tigers fall in overtime.

Christian Reeves had a chance to tie it from the free throw line with 3.7 seconds left in overtime, but his first attempt bounced off the rim. His second banked in and the Tigers would immediately foul with 3.5 seconds left.

South Carolina then made two free throws and Chase Hunter’s three-pointer as time expired was wide of the mark.

After going scoreless in the first half, Chase Hunter came back with a vengeance after halftime, scoring all 27 of his points to lead the way for Clemson. The veteran guard shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, including hitting his last five.

Hunter’s three-pointer as time expired sent the game into overtime.

Ian Schieffelin scored 23 points before fouling out while also pulling down 12 rebounds, giving him his fifth double-double of the season. The veteran big was a productive 6-of-9 from the field, and not only did he have to contend with an aggressive South Carolina defense, he also had to endure some questionable officiating.

Jaeden Zackery added 10 points and Jake Hiedbreder also had 10, giving Clemson four players in double figures.

Collin Murray-Boyles led South Carolina with 22 points, while Myles Stute added 19 of his own, hitting 5-of-6 from deep.

After the Gamecocks controlled most of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half, the two teams battled back and forth down the stretch.

The Tigers’ shooting woes continued early as Clemson shot just 31% from the floor in the first half, which included a paltry 1-of-7 from beyond the arc as the Gamecocks were able to build a double-digit lead.

After the Gamecocks took a 5-0 lead to start the game, Clemson played from behind for most of the contest. The Tigers didn’t take their first lead until midway through the second half, when an alley-oop by Chauncey Wiggins put Clemson up 54-53.

The Tigers trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but a 14-0 run, highlighted by a pair of Jake Hiedbreder layups, allowed Clemson to tie the game at 24-24 with under four minutes left in the opening half. .

South Carolina would immediately go on a 10-0 run to push the lead back two 10, but two free throws by Ian Schieffelin would send the Tigers into the half trailing 34-26.

Clemson falls to 9-3 (1-0) on the season, while South Carolina moves to 8-3. The Gamecocks are now 3-0 against ACC teams this season.

Crazy state

The two teams combined for 44 fouls in what was a terrible officiating game. Schieffelin would fail, as would Viktor Lakhin.

Murray-Boyles also struck out in overtime.

Dillon Hunter was ejected with 12:46 left in the contest for a flagrant two-foul.

The Tigers return home and will host Wake Forest on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
