‘Bluey’ movie is coming

Let’s go to the movies…with the Heeler family!

The first-ever animated feature film for “Bluey” will hit theaters in 2027, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company announced. According to a press release, the film will “continue the adventures of Bluey, a lovable, inexhaustible, blue heeler who lives with his mother, father and little sister, Bingo.”

Fans of the show have been on an emotional rollercoaster this year, from the 28-minute super gut punch of a season finale titled “The Sign” to the unexpected bonus episode aptly titled “Surprise” that includes a time jump with an adult Bluey.

There was a rumor that the beloved series was ending completely, but the creators of the show did not leave the viewers hanging. They introduced “Blue Minisodes” in the summer of 2024. The collection included 20 shorts that lean on Bluey and Bingo’s playful interactions and games.

What will the “Bluey” movie have in store for viewers?

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” series creator Joe Brumm said on the series’ website.I’ve always thought that ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical release. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together.”

Pooh also shared some “tricky” (a “blue” word for tricky plus difficult) news with fans: Although he wrote the script for the movie, he will stop making more TV episodes.

“Bluey has completely changed my life,” he wrote an open letter on the “Bluey” website. “It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a high will seem crazy to some, but right now I’m struggling to reach back really into the 4-6 year old world and write authentically.”

“Bluey” has already captured the magic and chaos of going to the movies with young children.

In a Season 2 episode titled “Movies”, Bandit takes Bluey and Bingo to see a movie…with mixed results.

Bandit is shocked at the price of tickets and popcorn, especially when paying for a 4-year-old who “doesn’t really want to watch.” Bluey is afraid of the “scary bits” and has existential questions about feeling “different.” Bingo spills the popcorn, complains about the movie volume and runs away.

While we don’t know the theme of the new movie, there’s a good chance it will have the same takeaway from the “Movies” section: “Just yourself.”
