8 years later, Disney is rebooting another major Johnny Depp film franchise

Disney looks set to reboot a movie franchise that featured Johnny Depp less than a decade after its last release.

Depp has been somewhat of a controversial figure over the past few years due to the defamation suit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Now that the public once again sees him in a much more favorable light, the prospect of him returning to acting seems much more viable.

Much of that discussion surrounded Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, even garnering comments from a now senior official. But a recent report indicated that another popular franchise of Depp’s may be ready to move on without him.

According to scooper Daniel RichtmanDisney plans to reboot live-action Alice in Wonderland franchise.

Reportedly, Star girl director/writer Julia Hart is lined up to direct and write a Queen of Hearts origin story for Disney, focusing on Alice in Wonderland villain.

It is currently unclear if this project is intended to be a Disney+ movie, a Disney+ series, or a Disney theatrical release. It will reportedly not be connected to Johnny Depp’s live-action either Alice in Wonderland film.

This happens over eight years after the release of Disney’s Alice through the looking glassDepp’s last time playing The Mad Hatter, which hit theaters on May 27, 2016.

Where will we see Johnny Depp return?

While Alice in Wonderland franchise is now being rebooted without Johnny Depp, there’s a chance fans will soon see him back on the big screen. For the record, although Depp has a few credits in the past few years, he hasn’t been in any major franchises since he was fired from his role in Fantastic beasts saga.

Reports indicated that Disney wants Depp back to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for a potential sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film. This would be a first Pirates film since 2017, and a script is reportedly underway behind the scenes.

Outside the new Pirates movie, fans are still waiting to see where Depp might appear next for another big role on the big or small screen.

All things considered, even with the news of this Alice in Wonderland reboot, Depp could soon have an opportunity to rebuild his public image to where it was at the height of his fame.

Both Johnny Depp’s Alice in Wonderland movies are streamed on Disney+.
