ForbesNEW ‘Connections’ Hints and Answers for Sunday 15th December

Hello! Welcome to the start of a new week. I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to go.

I had some fun plans lined up that were partially changed due to a stomach bug I’ve been dealing with for a few days. I’m okay (or I will be soon enough). I had some time to rest and take care of some things I intend to do in my apartment. Self-care, which includes home maintenance, is the best form of care.

Before we get started, I’ve started a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can chat about each game (and other topics) with me and other people. I’m always curious about how other people approach the game, so join in! It’s funny.

It’s also the best way to give me feedback on the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions when I mess up.

Today’s NEW Connections advice and answers for Monday 16 December will come straight up.

How Connections plays

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on NEW website or game app.

You are presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by finding out the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names of research study participants, or words with a body part in front.

There is only one solution to each puzzle and you have to be careful when it comes to words that can fit into more than one category. You can mix up the words to perhaps help you see connections between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the hardest. The purple group often involves puns.

Choose four words that you think fit together and press send. If you guess and you’re wrong, you lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you may see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with some tips and if you’re really struggling, today’s is Connections answer. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chat.

If you have one NEW Free access or Play subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections file. This includes all previous games of Connectionsso you can go back and play any of them you missed.

Apart from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my tips for each grid via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

What are today’s connections answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll down the page any further until you’re ready to find out about today Connections answer.

This is your last warning!

Today’s Connections the answers are…

  • Yellow Group — Radio Types (AM, HAM, SATELLITE, WALKIE-TALKIE)
  • Green group — kind of play games (FOOD, PILLOW, SNOWBALL, WATER BALLOON)
  • Blue group — snack cakes (DEVIL DOG, DING DONG, HOHO, YODEL)
  • Purple group — classic joke staples (BAR, CHICKEN, KNOCK-KNOCK, Pear)

My streak survives a third day, but only just! Here’s how I managed:

At first glance, what a strange collection of objects! I got into trouble very quickly when I made three mistakes before I got the blues. Oh oh.

I thought that KNOCK-KNOCK, DING-DONG, YODEL and HOHO could be types of contacting or greeting someone, although I also realized that DING DONG and HOHO are types of snacks (albeit American, as foreign players may not recognize).

That guess put me one away from a group, and after a few failed guesses with my initial thinking in mind, I eventually found the blues. I was a bit lucky as I have heard of a DEVIL DOG but never a YODEL snack.

This meant that KNOCK-KNOCK was probably part of a group of common things in joke setups, with CHICKEN (“Why did the chicken cross the road?”) and BAR (“A person, robot and alien walk into a bar.. . “). But I didn’t immediately see which word would go with them, and I was down to my last guess, so I didn’t want to take a shot in the dark.

Fortunately, I was able to put them aside when I saw SNOWBALLOON and WATER BALLOON next to each other. It cleaned up the greens. I was down in the yellows and purples, usually a good position to be in, but not with a life left.

Fortunately, having eight terms left on a smaller grid made the yellows jump out. So I locked the purple ones and then the yellow ones. I love Regina Spektor’s music so much. Had to go with that song for the yellow clue.

LIGHT Pære is also part of a regular joke setup, by by. As in, how many Scots does it take to change a light bulb?

(Any guesses?)

The answer is no one, they will be happy to sit in the dark and save some money. (It’s okay, I’m Scottish, I’m allowed to make this joke.)

That’s all there is to it for today Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check out my blog for tips and the fix for Tuesday’s match if you need them.

PS I was originally going to go with a game recommendation, but I’ll save that for another day because the purples inspired me to take a different path.

Norm Macdonald is one of the funniest people to ever walk the face of the earth. That’s the way he tells them, and that’s why he was able to purposely bomb a roast and still find it funny. These absurdly convoluted jokes he told on Conan O’Brien’s show still crack me up:

PPS O’Brien’s parents died within days of each other this past week. Condolences to their family.

Have a nice day! Call someone you love!
