Alex Zendejas, Club America on the brink of the Liga MX Apertura title

Club America is on the verge of lifting the Liga MX Apertura title thanks to Alex Zendejas’ impressive performance in the first leg.

Zendejas assisted on Club America’s opening goal against Monterrey before providing the winning goal in a 2-1 first-leg victory over Monterrey. The U.S. men’s international winger earned Man of the Match honors after continuing his impressive recent season for the Mexican club.

Sergio Canales put Monterrey 1-0 up after 35 minutes, but Zendejas’ assist for Kevin Alvarez four minutes later helped the hosts tie things up before the break.

Zendejas called his own number in the 49th minute to put Club America up 2-1. It marked the 26-year-old’s fourth goal in 18 league games this season.

Club America would hold on for a decisive win in the first leg, giving them a lead heading into Sunday’s second leg in Monterey.

With USMNT forward Brandon Vazquez playing 24 minutes off the bench for Monterrey.
