Strong storm to bring rain, wind, mountain snow

Widespread rain and gusty winds will affect Western Washington on Friday as a potent weather system moves into the region.

Expect increasing rain as the day progresses, with gusty winds developing after sunset. High temperatures will be close to average for this time of year.

Light showers will continue to fall around the Puget Sound area Friday morning. The rain will become more widespread and increase in intensity towards the afternoon.

The widespread rain will transition to on-and-off showers late Friday into Saturday. Isolated thunderstorms are possible Saturday, especially along the Washington coast.

Gusty winds will begin to pick up Friday afternoon, with the strongest gusts blowing overnight and early Saturday morning.

The strongest winds will be in the usual places: the San Juan Islands, Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island, western Whatcom and Skagit counties, and the Washington Coast. Gusts will be between 35 and 45 mph, with isolated gusts above 50 mph.

This storm will not cause widespread power outages, but there may be some scattered areas that will go dark overnight.

Snow levels are at 4,000 feet Friday morning, but will continue to drop to about 2,500 feet on Sunday. Four to 8 inches of fresh powder is expected over White and Stevens passes on Sunday. Two to 5 inches of snow is expected over Snoqualmie Pass.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for the Washington coast.

The biggest impacts will be around the late morning high tide on Friday and Saturday. Two to three feet of flooding could affect roads and businesses near the coast. Big waves are also expected during this time as the weekend storm rolls through.

Once we get through Saturday, the weather will settle down on Sunday, leaving us mostly dry with a few early showers. If you’re going to the Sunday Night Football Seahawks game against the Green Bay Packers, it looks cool, dry and cloudy.

Monday through Wednesday will be showery at times. Another dry pattern sets up Thursday and Friday next week.
