Lisa Kudrow began to fear AI after watching Tom Hanks’ movie

Lisa Kudrow fears an uncertain future as artificial intelligence becomes more and more prevalent in Hollywood.

During a recent appearance on the “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” podcast, she discussed the latest film “Here,” directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The film used AI to allow the stars to play the same characters all the way from their teenage years to their old age.

“They shot it and they could actually shoot the scene and then watch the playback of them as younger people and it’s ready to see them,” Kudrow said.

She continued: “And all I got from it was that this is an endorsement of AI and oh, my God. It’s not like, ‘Oh, this is going to destroy everything,’ but what’s left?” Forget actors, what about up and coming actors?

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Kudrow also worried about the impact of AI outside of the entertainment industry.

“Put it completely aside, what work will there be for people? So what? There will be some kind of living wage for people, you don’t have to work? How can that possibly be enough?” she thought.

Hanks confirmed the use of artificial intelligence in the film last month when he appeared on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast.

“You go and do a data scan and then they match it to every single photograph that exists of me and they go back and find just as many photographs of me at age 17, 18, 19… my whole life . So they’re blocking them from using — are you ready for that, the scary word. They’re using AI to do all the work and make it happen faster,” he said.

The “Forrest Gump” star continued, “We would have two screens while we were shooting. One screen was what we really look like, and the other screen with almost a nanosecond delay time was us in the deep fake technology. So on that on one screen I’m a 67-year-old man pretending to be in high school, and on the other screen I’m 17.”

Hanks didn’t seem too concerned about the AI, saying “All it is is a film tool.”

He noted that to do the kind of work seen in “Here,” playing characters of different ages, “we still had hours in the makeup trailer because we had to do wigs and hair.”

Instead of the motion-capture dots often seen on actors’ faces in behind-the-scenes photos, Hanks revealed that the technology used on “Here” was able to use “the pores of your face just to match it like that.”

The Oscar winner also noted another impact AI had on their performance.

“Because we also had to look at the timing and the cadence of it and stuff, there’s a factor… we thought we were talking in a very realistic cadence and then we’d go and see a playback and it was so slow as molasses,” he explained.

The “Captain Phillips” star added: “It didn’t make it any funner to sit there and look at ourselves dressed the way we were.”

Hanks has had to warn fans about fake ads that use his name, likeness and voice via AI to promote products.

In August, he posted a statement on Instagram saying: “There are several ads across the internet falsely using my name, image and voice promoting miracle cures and panaceas. These ads have been created without my consent, fraudulently and through AI .”

He continued, “I have nothing to do with these posts or productions and treatments, or spokespeople who tout these cures. I have type 2 diabetes and I work ONLY with my board certified physician regarding my treatment. DO NOT BE SCAMMED. DO BE DO NOT SCAM DO NOT LOSE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.”
