A defending champion takes on a team seeking its first title in nearly 60 years.

It will be the last of eight matchups at the LHSAA Prep Classic in New Orleans as defending Division I Non-Select champion Ruston takes on Central-Baton Rouge for the Division I Non-Select title on Saturday afternoon.

Ruston (11-2), no. 3 seed in the bracket, will seek back-to-back championships, which the Bearcats have yet to do. Also, a win Saturday would give Ruston its 10th state championship.

The Bearcats got past Zachary in the regional round, a rematch of last season’s title game. Then Ruston put together dominant performances in the quarterfinals, beating Southside 49-7 and then rolling past Destrehan, 44-7, in last week’s semifinals.

Ruston is led on offense by quarterback Josh Brantley, a Tulane signee who was named the Most Outstanding Player in last season’s title game win against Zachary.

Central-Baton Rouge won its only championship in 1966, which was also the last time the Wildcats reached a title game. Which means they have yet to play in a Prep Classic game at the Superdome, which opened in the mid-1970s.

Wildcats, no. 4 seed, has found a way to win the playoff. They outlasted West Monroe, 21-7, in the quarterfinals and then upended top-seeded Neville, 17-13, by returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown late in the game.
