Southampton’s transfer target suffered a major setback this week

Southampton transfer target Kwame Poku has suffered a major injury setback this week. Is it time for the Saints to reconsider?

With the January transfer window inching closer and closer, it’s clear that Southampton need to improve their squad in the new year. Russell Martin simply cannot continue the way he is playing, but he also needs reinforcements to be fair to him.

Last month, Southampton were linked with the signing of Peterborough United’s standout striker, Kwame Poku. The links were made after an incredible start to the season for the Posh forward, but now Saints will have to reconsider.

As highlighted by BBC Sport this weekKwame Poku faces about three months on the injury treatment table. This comes after the prolific goalscorer underwent surgery to fix his hamstring injury.

Now Southampton must reconsider. There is little point in signing a player in January who would not be able to play for at least two more months. Although that would be a very “Southampton transfer”, please let’s avoid the confusion.

There were already question marks about Poku making the step up from the third division to the first. While he is obviously an excellent player with great potential, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish to League One.

Southampton are not in a position where they can afford to take bets in the January transfer window. Unfortunately, doing so would send the message that Saints are preparing for life in the Championship next season.

Instead, Southampton will hopefully be positive in their transfer approach. Let’s cross our fingers that the Southampton owners envision next season being played in the Premier League rather than back in the Championship. A tough question, of courseā€¦
