As the sun set before 5 p.m. and the cold winter weather finally set in, Iowans could use a little more sunlight. The winter solstice is coming, marking the end of the sunset earlier each day.

What is winter solstice?

Not only does the winter solstice mark the shortest day and longest night, but it is also the first day of winter, according to Farmer’s Almanac. Although winter technically begins in late December, the days get longer as the year progresses until the summer solstice in June.

Des Moines will see just more than nine hours of daylight during the winter solstice, according to timeandate.com. The sun rises at 7.38 and goes down at 16.47

When was Iowa’s earliest sunset?

Des Moines is already experiencing its earliest sunsets. Since 1 December, the sunset has been at 16.44. It is expected to go down at 16.45 from December 15, and at the end of December the sun will set as late as 16:54

When does winter end?

Winter lasts from Saturday 21 December 2024 in the Northern Hemisphere until Thursday 20 March 2025when the vernal equinox will mark the beginning of spring.
