The Cardinals could send the $260 million Gold Glover to the Red Sox at the Winter Meetings

St. Louis Cardinals may finally get a chance to put their “reset” into motion at the winter meetings this week in Dallas.

This offseason, St. Louis is not looking to add free agents, but rather to clear money and shed some salary for 2025.

One way they could do that is by trading Nolan Arenado. He has a no-trade clause, which could complicate matters, but the Cardinals seem more likely to move him than All-Star closer Ryan Helsley.

Will Leitch by MLB.com proposed the idea that St. Louis traded the eight-time All-Star to the Boston Red Sox.

“Boston has a little more ground to clear for Arenado than some of the other teams on this list. After all, they have a 28-year-old star in Rafael Devers at third base. But Devers is getting there. in his career, where it’s starting to make more and more sense to move him to first base, given his consistently below-average defense at the hot corner,” Leitch wrote.

“The Red Sox have indicated they’re ready to start thinking more urgently and more aggressively than they’ve been willing to in recent years. Bringing in someone like Arenado to take aim at the Green Monster would be a clear sign that they are trying to win right away.

Arenado hit .272 with 16 home runs, 71 RBI and a .719 OPS in 2024 with the St. Louis. It was a far cry from where he was in 2022, when he was a National League MVP finalist with Cardinal Paul Goldschmidt.

Boston clearly has lofty goals this offseason, and going to the Red Sox for a win might rejuvenate the slugger.

The Cardinals likely won’t get a major move for Arenado, but could end up with some Major League-ready prospects to help them in 2025.

This would also clear third base for one of Brendan Donovan, Jordan Walker, Nolan Gorman and Thomas Saggese.

St. Louis will be an interesting team to watch at the Winter Meetings this week.
