Hated former boss on brink of shocking return to Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs have not been shy about making moves this season to address various needs on their roster.

The back-to-back Super Bowl champions acquired wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in a trade from the Tennessee Titans before the deadline. They also recently signed veteran offensive lineman DJ Humphries to address the left tackle issues.

Some Chiefs fans thought the team would trade for a cornerback at last month’s deadline. But Kansas City ultimately opted for the idea, despite being in contention to acquire Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore.

That said, Kansas City is looking to make a late-season addition to the secondary as the CB2 spot is undecided between Nazeeh Johnson and Joshua Williams. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Saturday night that former Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson is expected to visit Kansas City on Monday for a potential reunion.

The 31-year-old cornerback reportedly retired in June after playing the last two seasons with the Houston Texans. But with the chance to possibly win a Super Bowl, it’s not a surprise that Nelson is considering a return to Kansas City.

The Chiefs took Nelson with the 98th overall pick in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-11 cornerback spent four seasons in Kansas City and was a full-time starter in 2016 and ’18.

Nelson’s best season with the Chiefs came in 2018, when he posted 68 combined tackles, 15 pass breakups and four interceptions. The former third-round pick gave up five receiving TDs during that season. However, he had an excellent 51.3 completion percentage allowed on targets and a 72.6 passer rating allowed when targeted.

Chiefs fans aren’t too excited about Nelson possibly returning to Kansas City based on his first stint with the ball club. But given Kansas City’s CB2 issues right now, they could use another defensive back to throw out there.
