Police are piecing together the suspect’s movements in the days leading up to the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO. Thompson was killed outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday, but police say the suspected gunman was in the city for more than a week before that.

The suspected gunman was traveling on a Greyhound bus that started its route in Atlanta, law enforcement sources told CNN. Authorities do not know if the suspect boarded in Atlanta or elsewhere, sources said.

The Atlanta Police Department will provide assistance to the NYPD as needed in the investigation, department officials announced Friday.

Police believe the assailant arrived at New York City’s Port Authority bus terminal on Nov. 24 — 10 days before the shooting — and then checked into the Upper West Side hostel, a law enforcement official said.

After that, he seems to have moved around the city, the official said.

The suspected shooter appeared to be wearing a mask during most of his stay at the hostel, law enforcement sources told CNN. He was placed in a multi-person room with two other men, a source said. However, police released a photo of the suspect on Thursday showing him at the hostel without a mask.

The suspect checked out of the hostel on Nov. 29 and checked back in on Nov. 30, law enforcement sources told CNN. He paid the establishment in cash, according to a source — by checking into the hostel with a fake New Jersey driver’s license, a law enforcement official previously told CNN.
