After a brutally hot summer, followed by one of the warmest autumns on record, the weather is finally starting to feel like winter across the Lone Star State. Today, most Texans can expect to experience the coldest temperatures of the year since February, marking a significant shift in the season.

The cold will be driven by several factors. First, a cold front swept through Texas on Thursday, heralding strong northeast winds that will continue to pour cold air into the state today. Additionally, mostly cloudy skies and a chance of rain won’t allow temperatures to rise much during the day.

Freeze start for some

Much of North Texas and the Panhandle will wake up to below freezing temperatures this morning. Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex will start near the freezing point of 32 degrees. Areas to the north, such as Denton, Sherman and Wichita Falls, will see temperatures drop well below freezing, possibly 27 to 30 degrees.

As you move south, freezing temperatures are not expected, but the air will still be plenty cold. Waco’s temps start in the mid-30s, and Austin’s will start in the low 40s. Here in San Antonio, we expect lows Friday morning in the mid 40s, so be sure to grab a coat before heading out for the day.

Cloudy skies are expected in San Antonio, and we’ll likely encounter scattered rain and drizzle throughout the morning and early afternoon. However, rain will be very light, resulting in rainfall amounts of less than one-tenth of an inch for most areas.

Temperatures will remain fairly steady throughout the morning and likely won’t rise too quickly even into the afternoon. San Antonio temperatures will likely top out between 50 and 52 degrees during the afternoon, making it the coldest afternoon we’ve experienced since late February. as the daily high was 48 degrees on 29 Feb.

Much of the state will be in the same boat, or even a little colder. Houston will only reach the mid-50s Friday afternoon. Parts of North Texas will be in the upper 40s to low 50s. Finally, the coldest place will be West Texas, where highs will only be in the mid-40s in Midland-Odessa.

Cold and rainy Saturday

San Antonio’s best rain chances will arrive overnight and into Saturday morning. Most of the rain will be light, but scattered heavy showers will also be possible, especially between 05.00 and 11.00. Scattered showers will also remain possible through the afternoon and evening. Be careful and take it slow on the roads if you must travel.

Temperatures are likely to be even cooler than they were on Friday. Morning lows will drop into the low 40s, and temperatures will remain steady in the 40s most of the day. Afternoon highs will either be in the upper 40s or low 50s in South Texas.

Shown is the potential future weather radar for Texas at 5 Saturday morning. Scattered showers and storms are expected that morning across South Texas.
