Everton vs Liverpool: Merseyside derby postponed due to storm

Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions on Merseyside.

The final league Merseyside derby at Goodison – ahead of Everton’s move to a new stadium in Bramley-Moore Dock – was due to kick off at 12.30pm on Saturday.

However, it has now been confirmed that the match will not go ahead due to the effects of Storm Darragh, with strong winds of up to 70mph in the region.

Talks between the two clubs and local authorities took place on Saturday morning, with concerns over the safety of supporters traveling to Goodison leading to the call for a postponement. The clash is now likely to be rearranged as a night game later in the season.

A statement from Everton on Saturday morning said: “Following a Security Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park attended by officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council this morning, it was decided that due to the risk to security in the local area of due to strong gusts, and an amber high wind warning remaining in place until 6 a.m. Sunday, today’s game should be postponed for safety reasons.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and thank supporters for their understanding. While we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is paramount.

“Information regarding a rearranged tournament date will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased for the original tournament event will remain valid for the rearranged tournament event.”

Liverpool are currently seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, although that lead could be cut to four points if Chelsea and Arsenal secure wins over Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur respectively this weekend.
