The gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson appears to have been “skilled” in the use of firearms, police say, although they cannot say for sure whether he was a professional hitman.

The 9mm handgun he used to shoot Thompson jammed, but the gunman was able to “clear the misfires pretty quickly,” indicating he is familiar with firearms, NYPD Detective Chief Joseph Kenny said. Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting. although Thompson’s wife Paulette told NBC News that he had recently received threats.

Investigators are interviewing Thompson’s employees and family members in Minnesota, and the NYPD has executed a search warrant on his hotel room.

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting continues as normal, police said

Tonight’s Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center is expected to continue as normal following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson a few blocks away. The police state that they will have a large presence in the area.

“This incident will not affect the tree lighting,” said NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, who noted that the ceremony will begin at 19.00 and the lighting at 10 p.m. Street all the way down to 47th Street.”

The police presence will also be strengthened in the metro. “This is a terrible event, but we will continue and people will enjoy the tree lighting tonight,” Maddrey said.

The suspect was last seen fleeing on an electric Citi Bike into Central Park, which is in the opposite direction of Rockefeller Center.
