Tennessee state senator arrested, charged in Georgia DUI hit-and-run

JEKYLL ISLAND, GA. (WVLT) – Police in Georgia have confirmed that Tennessee Sen. Ken Yager (R-Kingston) is facing a DUI and a Jekyll Island hit-and-run charge.

It happened Tuesday around 5 p.m., according to a report from the Georgia Department of Public Safety (GDPS).

The department said state troopers were asked to look for a Ford Edge with Tennessee license plates that was involved in the hit-and-run.

Troopers said they found the car in a store parking lot, adding that emergency personnel were already on the scene helping a person who had tripped and fallen.

That person was Sen. Yager, who had been driving the car, according to GDPS representatives.

GDPS also said Yager admitted to crashing.

“Troopers detected a distinct odor of alcohol on his breath and he admitted to being involved in a crash earlier but knew law enforcement was on the way,” GDPS officials said.

Yager was booked into the Glynn County Jail, GDSP said. WVLT News reached out to the county and got more information.

We also reached out to Yager’s office. He said the following in an email:

“An unfortunate incident occurred last night. On the advice of my attorney, I cannot discuss the details at this time. I am and will continue to cooperate fully with the authorities to bring this incident to an appropriate conclusion.”

According to the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office, Yager was booked Tuesday and released Wednesday. He faces three charges: DUI, hit-and-run and failure to stop at a stop sign.
