Virginia picks up a first down on a nice third down run by Noah Vaughn, but the drive stalls after that when Tony Muskett throws Trell Harris on another deep ball. UVA will punt for the third time.

Pop Watson had Stephen Gosnell open on a deep ball but overthrew him. Virginia’s defense forces the first punt of the game, forcing the Hokies to go three-and-out.

On the first play of the second quarter, Muskett throws to Noah Vaughn in the flat and he runs for the first down on 3rd and long. Muskett tries to hand the ball off and miscommunicates with his running back, but he is able to make something out of nothing, rushing for another first down. The Cavaliers find themselves in another third-and-long situation, and Muskett tries a deep ball to Trell Harris, but the pass is well covered and broken up by Mansoor Delane. UVA picks up a few first downs, but ultimately scores again.

Virginia Tech advances the ball into UVA territory, but the Cavaliers are able to take a stand after a team penalty puts the Hokies behind the chains. John Love comes on and knocks his 44-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. Virginia Tech leads 10-0.

Virginia tries a flea flicker on its first offensive play of the game, but Tony Muskett is immediately sacked. Trell Harris, returning after missing the last eight games with an injury, drops the ball on his first down and then Muskett can’t find Suderian Harrison downfield on 3rd and long. UVA goes three-and-out.

Virginia Tech has poor field position to start the drive thanks to a great tackle by Ethan Davies on the opening kickoff, but it doesn’t matter as the Hokies drive 90 yards in 11 plays to score on their first possession of the game. Pop Watson found Da’Quan Felton wide open in the middle of the field for 42 yards, then Bhayshul Tuten found the end zone untouched on a 6-yard touchdown run.

UVA’s captains for tonight’s game are Tony Muskett, Suderian Harrison, Chico Bennett Jr. and Will Bettridge. Virginia has won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Virginia Tech will receive the ball to start the game.
