Trump names pardoned father of Jared Kushner to key diplomatic role: Live

Trudeau reportedly meets Trump at Mar-a-Lago

Donald Trump has announced that Charles Kusher, father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, will be the new US ambassador to France.

The president-elect described Kushner, a former convicted felon, as “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist and negotiator who will be a strong advocate for our country and its interests… Congratulations to Charlie, his wonderful wife Seryl, their 4 children and 14 grandchildren.”

In 2005, Kushner – a lawyer – was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering. He was sentenced to two years in prison. As a convicted felon, he was also disbarred in three states.

He was pardoned by Trump in December 2020.

Jared Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, previously worked as a senior adviser to the president-elect during his first term.

It comes as Trump and his allies continue to pave the way for an ambitious 100-day agenda that includes tax cuts, mass deportations and sweeping international tariffs on major trading partners.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dined with the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago residence on Friday, just days after he threatened Canada and Mexico with 25 percent tariffs, with Trump later describing the meeting as “very productive.”
