Matchday 5 in Bayer Leverkusen

We would have liked to go to Rhineland with a win under our belts, but at least we know from our last game in Rotterdam that form book has a habit of going out the window in the Champions League! Our first three points in UEFA Champions League season has seen us keep our chances to make knockout stages livealthough the quality of our resistance is increasing.

Tuesday evening on 21:00 CET, the fifth UEFA Champions League matchday sees German champions Bayer Leverkusen host our Red Bulls! After finally banishing their reputation as perennial runners-up last season, Leverkusen are looking to take on the continent’s best. Xabi Alonso page not only completed the historic feat of being the first team to win a Bundesliga title in an unbeaten season, but also won the German Cup and reached the final of the UEFA Europa League.

It was only to be expected that Leverkusen would struggle to maintain such stunning form, but there is no mistaking the strength of a squad with Florian Wirtz taking the lead in an ensemble worth an estimated 635 million Euros. Seven points leave them 13th in the table at the moment, while a 5-2 win against Heidenheim has moved them up to fourth in the German Bundesliga table.

In our first ever meeting with Leverkusen, we want to throw ours underdogs take and create a great disturbance. Close to 900 Salzburg fans are expected in the 30,000 capacity BayArena to cheer on our Red Bulls. We face a team on Tuesday that is very mature and has incredible quality. They push very hard and want to put us under pressure right from the start. We must find solutions. I hope that we will play like we did at Feyenoord and show the same virtues, determination and cleverness that we had in our last Champions League performance.

We knew that the opponents would not get any easier in the Champions League. It was important that we finally got points at Feyenoord. We certainly don’t start as favorites against the German champions, but that makes us even more determined to surprise them. We can only achieve that if we give an ideal performance and play very disciplined football.
