Browns consultant Mike Vrabel offers some insight into his NFL coaching future

Mike Vrabel didn’t offer much insight into his coaching future Monday night.

Vrabel joined the “ManningCast” broadcast of “Monday Night Football” with Eli Manning and Peyton Manning.

Vrabel was hired by the Browns in March after not getting a new NFL head coaching job after being fired by the Tennessee Titans. His official title with Brown is a coaching and personnel consultant.

Wrabble, who is from Akron and starred at Walsh Jesuit High School and Ohio State University, Peyton Manning said he is enjoying his consulting role with the Browns.

“The fit has been really cool. I’ve enjoyed the Haslam family. I grew up 30 miles south of here. I grew up a Browns fan,” said Vrabel, who was wearing a quarter-zip Browns jersey.

He dodged a question about which NFL team he will coach next season.

What Vrabel actually does for the Browns is nebulous. After working out with the team during the week, he has been on the sidelines of the last two Browns games wearing an earplug.

“Vrabes is involved in a lot of what we do,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters this month. “He’s out there at home games, he was able to come to this one. He listens to the conversations with us. He’s a great resource for me on game day, Monday through Friday, so he’ll continue to do that.”

Two NFL head coaching jobs are open right now. The New Orleans Saints and New York Jets have interim coaches in Darren Rizzi and Jeff Ulbrich, respectively.

There will also be plenty of NFL headlining jobs this offseason — just maybe not with the Browns. Vrabel is rumored in almost every potential opening. He ranks among the top coaches available along with Bill Belichick and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Urban Meyer didn’t remember who Mike Vrabel was

While Vrabel didn’t hint much about his next professional move, he did share a humorous anecdote about a meeting with former Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.

While Meyer was the coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Vrabel with the Titans, he did not remember his former colleague.

“Yes, I’m the head coach of the Titans and I worked for you for two years,” Vrabel told Meyer.

Vrabel, who was the final guest Monday night, mostly talked football and Derrick Henry, his Pro Bowl running back when he was with the Tennessee Titans.
