Here is today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Novels from the 19th century) for Monday 25 November 2024 (Season 41, Game 56):

The mention of a new railway section between Rothal and Allahabad in India leads to an argument and then a bet in this novel

(correct answer under participants)

Today’s Jeopardy! participants:

Carolyn Gramlinga science writer from Washington, DC
Carolyn Gramling on Jeopardy!
Kevin Laskowskian Episcopal minister from Falls Church, Virginia
Kevin Laskowski on Jeopardy!
Adam Hersha lawyer from Brooklyn, New York (1 day in total: $29,000)
Adam Hersh on Jeopardy!

Andy’s thoughts before the game:

Welcome to week #12 of season 41 of Dangerwith Adam Hersh returning as 1-day champion. The announcement last Monday of the Tournament of Champions (and to a lesser extent the Champions Wildcard) field has added some intrigue to today’s match-up. Adam’s 1-day total is only $200 less than Evan Dorey’s, and if Adam doesn’t win today, it’s unknown if Adam’s total is enough for the Champions Wildcard.

Viewers should also be cautioned to check their local listings for later in the week, as there are often significant advance purchases on both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday thanks to various pro football and college football games.

The inciting incident in the plot of Jules Verne’s novel Around the world in eighty days was a newspaper article mentioning that a new railway section opening in India makes it possible to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. Phileas Fogg, wealthy English gentleman and Reform Club member, takes a bet of £20,000 – half his fortune – that he can actually travel around the world in 80 days.

Interestingly, the novel was originally serialized in the fall of 1872 in Le Tempswith the publication of its ending purposefully coinciding with Fogg’s “deadline” in the book on December 21; In addition, due to its contemporary setting, many readers believed the journey was taking place and began betting on the outcome.
