Some promising news about ‘A Man On The Inside’ season 2 on Netflix

Mike Schur’s new comedy, A man on the insideLooking forward to season 2.

Like Schur’s other comedies, The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place, A Man on the Inside is set for a multi-season run on Netflix, which he and Ted Danson reprized now that Season 1 has aired. And there is promising news on that front.

If you’ve seen the series, the show is apparently set up for more spy adventures with Charles at the end, and here’s what the duo behind the show have to say about it to Deadline:

Schur: “Fingers crossed, we’ll build a bridge when we get to it, some kind of deal. But I will say that there is no shortage of ideas from me and from other writers about what we can do in an upcoming season. Crosses Fingers crossed, we’ll see.”

Danson: “Dear Lord, yes,” literally crosses his fingers in the interview.

The good news is that A Man on the Inside is currently performing on all three “Holy Trinity” metrics in the Netflix show renewal:

  • It is well monitored: The series has debuted instantly at #1 and looks set to stay there for a while. We have figures for a week or so, but it’s rare for a brand new series to literally arrive at number one. That’s a good sign.
  • It is extremely good: Netflix won’t renew series based on sheer quality alone most of the time, but yes, it certainly helps that A Man on the Inside is being received hugely positively by critics (95% score) and audiences (96%). Netflix wants a stable of…great shows.
  • It’s cheap: I mean, I don’t know how much Schur, Danson, and the rest of the cast get paid, but in terms of the show’s concept, this show was set almost entirely inside a nursing home, and half-hour comedies like this are generally very cheap to produce in compared to other shows. And Netflix and all other streamers, love cheap shows.

The fourth metric here that we can’t really quantify is how many people finish the series in full, which is a big indicator of whether a second season will be worth a renewal. All I have is anecdotal evidence here, but I finished it in two takes and I have a few friends who did the same. It’s very easy to get all the way through with short episodes and the ongoing mystery of the case in question driving you forward.

This is a no-brainer. A Man on the Inside is getting a Season 2. I don’t know how long it will take to be announced, but there’s just no doubt based on what we’re seeing here.
