Nico Hischier scores a natural hat trick as the New Jersey Devils cruise past the Nashville Predators

The Nashville Predators‘ the search for coherence continues.

Nico Hischier’s natural second-period hat trick boosted the New Jersey Devils to a 5-2 victory over the Predators on Monday in Newark.

Filip Forsberg opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the season on an odd-angle shot off the wall at 5:08 of the first period on the Predators’ first shot on goal of the game.

But the Devils’ speed dictated the tempo of the game from then on. Erik Haula tied the game at 1-1 on a quick rush from a Johnathan Kovacevic pass from right to left. Hischier, New Jersey’s captain, then contributed in the second period with a natural hat trick.

Hischier scored after skating past Marc Del Gaizo at 3:52 into the second, scored his second goal on the power play after cleaning up a goal and completed the hat trick with a breakaway off a Brady Skjei turnover at . 16:57. the other.

Juuse Saros, playing well despite the score, sat in the third period with a busy schedule as Scott Wedgewood worked between the pipes to end the game.

Zachary L’Heureux scored his second goal of the season off a nice feed from Roman Josi at 7:39 of the third period to cut the Devils’ lead to 4-2.

New Jersey’s Timo Meier inexplicably opened the door for the Predators by cross-checking L’Heureux in the face, earning him a major penalty and a game-tying foul. But Nashville couldn’t do anything on the power play, managing just one shot on goal through the five-minute man advantage.

L’Heureux did not return to the bench after leaving the ice bloodied from the Meier cross.

Predators injury update: Jeremy Lauzon has lower body injuries

Jeremy Lauzon left Monday’s game in the second period with a lower-body injury and did not return.

Nashville (7-12-3) is back at home on Wednesday to play the Philadelphia Flyers at Bridgestone Arena.

Nashville Predators vs. New Jersey Devils live updates

Nashville manages just one shot on the 5 minute power play

Nashville’s power play wasn’t very good throughout the five-minute man advantage, and shots on goal were actually 1-1 during that time.

Shortly after the power play ended, Justin Dowling scored on an empty net to close the game at 5-2.

Timo Meier sent off for cross-checking Zachary L’Heureux in the face

After a shot on goal and a whistle, Zachary L’Heureux pushes Timo Meier. In response, Meier cross-checks L’Heureux in the face. A scrum follows.

Meier gets a major penalty and a game misconduct for the game. A rather big overreaction compared to what you can see on the replay.

L’Heureux goes to the dressing room with blood flowing. Ugly, ugly game.

Nashville will have a five minute power play with 7:42 left.

Devils 4, Predators 2 at 7:39 of 3rd period: Zachary L’Heureux boards

Zachary L’Heureux scores his second NHL goal off a nice feed from Roman Josi to cut the Devils’ lead to 4-2.

Nashville has started the third period better, but only a consolation at this point given the scoreline.

Scott Wedgewood replaces Juuse Saros for the third term

Juuse Saros will rest in the third period, with Scott Wedgewood now on the ice. The Predators play three games in four days starting Wednesday.

Saros kept this game from being much worse than the 4-1 score.

Jeremy Lauzon will not return with a lower body injury

Jeremy Lauzon will not return to Monday’s game with a lower-body injury, the Predators announced. Lauzon played 9:11 but left the bench in the second period.

Nashville plays the final period with five defensemen.

Devils 4, Predators 1 at 16:57 of second period: Nico Hischier hat trick after Brady Skjei turnover

Brady Skjei turns the puck over in the neutral zone and Nico Hischier is all alone to beat Juuse Saros for his third goal of the second period.

Hischier’s first NHL hat trick, and Nashville is in a deep hole.

Devils 3, Predators 1 at 10:01 of second period: Nico Hischier on the power play

The Predators can’t clear the puck on the penalty kick and Nico Hischier cleans it up in front of the net for his second goal of the season. 3-1 Devils.

Nashville was on the PK after a too many men penalty.

Devils 2, Predators 1 at 3:52 of 2nd period: Nico Hischier uses his speed to score

Nico Hischier gets past Marc Del Gaizo in the rush and beats Juuse Saros on a tremendous individual effort. Can’t say enough about the Devils overall team speed. Timo Meier and Paul Cotter get the assists.

FWIW: Forsberg’s first period goal remains unassisted.

Predators 1, Devils 1 at 11:29 in the first period: Erik Haula ends a 3-on-2 rush

New Jersey gets on the board via a 3-on-2 rush as Johnathan Kovacevic finds Erik Haula for the tip-in as Haula crashes toward the net.

1-1, and the shot is 9-2 to the Devils. NJD looks significantly faster than Nashville in this first period.

Predators 1, Devils 0 at 5:08 of first period: Filip Forsberg off the boards

After an early Alexandre Carrier penalty and a slow start overall for the Predators, the team’s leading scorer put the visitors ahead 1-0. Filip Forsberg fires a potential shot off the wall to the left of Jacob Markstrom and it beats the Devils goalie high.

Forsberg’s goal was Nashville’s first shot on goal of the game.
