The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the payment schedule for this year’s Christmas bonus following calls for a rate hike from campaigners.

Benefit recipients have now been informed when they will receive the £10 boost from the government department this Christmas season.

This sum of money is given to those who claim certain benefit payments from the DWP during the qualifying week, which usually falls on the first week of December.

Anyone looking for a DWP Christmas bonus should prepare to claim it early next month.

The payment is delivered to the bank or building society that someone already receives their entitlement to.

Confirmation of the payment plan comes amid controversy over how much the bonus is currently worth.

Poverty and disability rights campaigners have called for the Christmas bonus to be worth more during the cost of living crisis.

More than 20,000 individuals have backed a petition calling for a pay rise, citing recent changes to eligibility for benefits such as the Winter Fuel Payment.

Earlier this year, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed the allowance would be means-tested, with Britons having to have Pension Credit to get up to £300 in energy bill support.

This decision means around 10 million pensioners will lose access to the Winter Fuel Payment despite Ofgem raising the energy price cap.

Shona McMahon stared at a petition outlining her reasons why the Christmas bonus pay rate should be strengthened.

She explained: “Christmas is the most expensive time of the year.

“Pensioners, the vulnerable and people like myself, disabled people, could do with an extra boost at this time of year, especially as energy assistance has been scrapped.”

A DWP spokesman said: “We know that Christmas is a time when people stretch their budgets, which is why we are paying many people their benefits earlier than usual, helping them prepare for the festive period.”
