San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy underwent an MRI early last week after suffering a shoulder injury in the team’s Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Initially, the team believed the injury only required rest and remained optimistic about his availability for the critical Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers.

But after Purdy was severely limited during practice, the 49ers ruled him out on Friday. His status for next weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills remains “up in the air.”

On Sunday morning, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer revealed that Purdy underwent a second MRI after experiencing significant trouble throwing during Thursday’s practice. He ultimately left the session to receive treatment for his sore shoulder, canceling his post-practice press conference with reporters, casting serious doubt on his availability this weekend.

“So he actually hurt his shoulder last week against Seattle and on Monday they gave him an MRI just showed a shoulder strain,” Glazer said. “Tuesday, Wednesday, practice. They thought he was tracking the right pace there. And then, Thursday, he went out and tried to throw. It just locked on him.

“So what nobody knows is they gave him another MRI on Thursday, but it didn’t really show anything else. So they’re kind of living with a question of when he’s going to get back out there. They’re just going to try to rehab it, he hopes coming back next week, they just don’t know right now.”

Despite the setback, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers remain optimistic about Purdy’s chances to play against the Bills. The team does not see the injury as a long-term concern, although they acknowledge some uncertainty.

“49ers believe QB Brock Purdy should be able to return next Sunday for Buffalo despite his shoulder soreness,” Schefter wrote. “Then they also thought he would be able to start today at Green Bay before he couldn’t. Still, there doesn’t seem to be a high level of concern at this point.”
